SQFT MEASUREMENTS

Q&A

Q: Why would I need to know the square footage of my home?

A: More than likely, the main reason why someone might want to know the square footage of their home is because they are getting ready to put the house up for sale. The size of your home is one of the main factors that determines the value, so it's important to get it right!

Q: Can't we just rely on what the county assessors has our house measured at?

A: No! When the county assessor measured your house, they didn't actually go inside. This can make a huge difference, especially if you have a second floor or a basement.

Q: How does one determine the SQFT of a home?

A: In order to get an accurate SQFT measurement, we will measure the perimeter of the house. We typically start at one side of the house, measure the length, then work our way around until the entire perimeter is measured.

Q: What tools do you use to measure a house?

A: We will use a laser tape measure as well as our appraisal software to accurately determine the square footage.

Q: Is the garage included in your SQFT measurement?

A: Yes, and no. The garage will be measured separately but the garage is typically not included in the gross living area of the home, and therefore subtracted from the overall perimeter of the home. For example, if the total SQFT was 2,000 and the garage was 500 SQFT then the total GLA (gross living area) would be 1,500.

Q: How much does it cost to have our house measured?

A: We typically charge $150 to provide you with the square footage measurement. This price can change depending on the complexity of the home.
